Rio Ngumoha hails ‘special’ first Anfield goal for Liverpool
Rio Ngumoha could hardly hide his joy after scoring his first goal at Anfield in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Fulham, a strike that also made him the youngest Red ever to score at the stadium in a Premier League game.
“Coming to Anfield and getting three points, it’s a great feeling. The atmosphere was great again so it’s a positive day,” he told Sky Sports, clearly savouring the moment.
The 17-year-old winger opened the scoring with a composed effort in front of the Kop, later explaining how Andy Robertson’s movement freed him up. “It’s a special goal – Robbo created space for me so I just cut inside and aimed for the corner,” Ngumoha said.
His finish at 17 years and 225 days old broke Raheem Sterling’s long-standing club record of 17 years and 317 days for the youngest Liverpool scorer in a Premier League game at Anfield, with Jamie Carragher now third on the list. For Ngumoha, though, the numbers sit beneath the badge.
“Liverpool for me are the biggest club in the world… I’ve just got to keep working hard,” he added, determined to build on a night that already feels like the start of something bigger.
