Rio Ngumoha fails to make England squad for Spain clash

Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha has been left out of England’s matchday squad for Saturday night’s clash against World Cup champions Spain, despite earning his second senior call-up under manager Thomas Tuchel.

The 18-year-old had been in contention for a place in the squad after being included in England’s latest selection, having made his senior debut in June’s friendly victory over New Zealand.

His omission will come as a disappointment to Liverpool supporters, who had been hoping to see the teenager tested against one of Europe’s strongest sides.

Ngumoha’s chances of featuring appeared to improve this week after five England players withdrew through injury, including attackers Cole Palmer and Marcus Rashford.

However, Tuchel has opted not to include the Liverpool youngster in his final 23-man matchday squad, with James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White brought into the group.

Tuchel forced to make difficult call

UEFA rules limit teams to 23 players in a Nations League matchday squad, leaving Tuchel with decisions to make despite the number of injuries affecting his selection.

The addition of Garner and Gibbs-White has ultimately contributed to Ngumoha missing out on the squad for the meeting with Spain.

The teenager has made three league appearances for Liverpool this season but has started only once, highlighting the competition for places as he continues his transition into senior football.

His rapid progress had nevertheless earned him recognition from Tuchel, who handed him his first England call-up before his senior debut against New Zealand.

Ngumoha has continued to feature for Liverpool this season, but faces significant competition for attacking positions within the England setup.

Saka, Kane and Gordon lead attacking options

Tuchel still has several established options available despite the withdrawals.

Bukayo Saka, Harry Kane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anthony Gordon and Morgan Rogers remain among the attacking players in contention, while Eberechi Eze and Gibbs-White provide further options from midfield.

That depth has made it difficult for Ngumoha to secure a place, even with several players unavailable through injury.

His omission means the Liverpool winger will have to wait for another opportunity to add to his solitary England appearance.

Ngumoha’s emergence at club level has nevertheless continued to attract attention. The teenager has worked his way into the Liverpool first-team picture and has been given opportunities in the league despite his age.

No Liverpool player in England squad

Ngumoha’s exclusion also means there will be no Liverpool player in England’s 23-man squad for the Spain encounter.

Former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, however, has returned to the England setup after missing the World Cup during the summer.

Ngumoha’s immediate focus will now return to his club commitments and continuing his development at Liverpool.

Saturday’s omission does not change the fact that he remains part of Tuchel’s senior plans, but the decision underlines the competition he faces to establish himself among England’s attacking options.

With England preparing to face the reigning world champions, Tuchel has opted for experience and established options in his final selection, leaving the highly rated Liverpool teenager to watch from the sidelines.
