Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand is mourning the loss of his wife, Rebecca Ellison, who passed away after a battle with cancer. She died on Friday night at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, surrounded by close family.
Ferdinand, who now plays for Queens Park Rangers, released a heartfelt statement on Saturday confirming the news and paying tribute to his late wife.
“My soul mate slipped away last night,” he wrote. “Rebecca, my wonderful wife and the most devoted mother to our three beautiful children, has passed away after a short battle with cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.”
He continued: “She was a fantastic mother to our three beautiful children. We will miss her as a wife, sister, aunt, daughter, and granddaughter. She will live on in our memory as a guide and inspiration.”
The couple had three children together. Ferdinand also thanked the hospital staff for their care, saying: “She gave her everything to make our family happy and strong, and she fought the illness with courage and dignity. The Royal Marsden Hospital staff cared for her with the utmost professionalism and dignity.”
