South Africa Marches On: Banyana Banyana Advance to Final Olympic Qualifier
While Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a shocking exit, South Africa’s Banyana Banyana kept their Olympic dream alive by advancing to the final round of the Rio 2016 women’s football qualifiers.
The South Africans completed a double victory over Kenya, winning 1-0 in the return leg held in Machakos, just as they had done in the first leg. The decisive goal came in the 25th minute, courtesy of Rhoda Mulaudzi, who had come on after just 10 minutes to replace Ramalepe — the goalscorer from the first leg.
With an aggregate score of 2-0, South Africa now moves on to face Equatorial Guinea, who knocked out African giants Nigeria in a dramatic extra-time win. The two teams will now compete for one of the two available African spots at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The stakes couldn’t be higher as Banyana Banyana aim to make a second consecutive Olympic appearance, following their debut in London 2012.
