Former Cameroon national team coach Rigobert Song has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Central African Republic (CAR) national team.
Song signed a two-year contract on Monday, March 3, 2025, during a formal ceremony attended by the Minister of Sports.
However, the appointment has sparked controversy, with the Central African Football Federation (FCF) refusing to recognize the decision, citing a lack of consultation in the selection process.
A New Chapter for the Central African Republic
Song, a former Cameroon captain and AFCON winner, will lead the Fauves du Bas-Oubangi in their bid to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
His mandate officially begins immediately, with the team currently holding a training camp in Morocco ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
The Cameroonian tactician, who previously managed Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions, signed a contract worth 4,500,000 FCFA per month.
His task will be to rebuild and strengthen the squad, ensuring competitiveness in upcoming qualifiers and international tournaments.
Despite being announced as head coach several months ago, Song has yet to take charge of the team on the pitch. His immediate priority will be evaluating the squad and implementing his tactical philosophy as preparations intensify.
Federation Boycotts Appointment
Song’s appointment has not been without controversy. The Central African Football Federation (FCF) has voiced strong opposition to the decision, stating that it was not consulted before the Ministry of Sports finalized the appointment.
The FCF has since refused to endorse Song’s appointment, leading to uncertainty over his official status within the federation’s structure. The absence of federation representatives during the signing ceremony underscored their discontent with the process.
In a statement, the FCF reaffirmed its stance, insisting that it had not been involved in the selection process and therefore did not recognize Song as the official head coach. This administrative standoff now threatens to overshadow what should have been a positive step forward for Central African football.
A Challenging Road Ahead
Beyond the institutional challenges, Song will be tasked with revitalizing a national team that has struggled for success on the continental stage. With AFCON 2027 qualification as a primary objective, he must unite a fractured footballing system while delivering results on the pitch.
His extensive experience, including stints coaching Cameroon’s national team and youth teams, will be key in navigating both the sporting and administrative hurdles that come with the role.
Despite the ongoing power struggle, Song’s appointment signals the beginning of a new era for the Fauves du Bas-Oubangi.
The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the federation and government can resolve their differences and provide the team with the stability it needs to compete effectively on the international stage.
