REVEALED: Why Sekhukhune United have parted ways with Cedric Kaze

Sekhukhune United have announced the departure of head coach Cedric Kaze, bringing an end to a turbulent spell that has reportedly been overshadowed by internal conflict, alleged interference in football decisions and disputes over working conditions.

While the club confirmed Kaze’s exit, reports from South Africa suggest his time at the Premier Soccer League side was fraught with difficulties almost from the moment he arrived, with the Burundian coach now expected to pursue his full contractual compensation and potentially take the matter to FIFA if an agreement cannot be reached.

Problems reportedly began immediately

According to reports, Kaze’s relationship with the club encountered problems from his first day.

Rather than moving straight into suitable accommodation, the coach reportedly spent an extended period sleeping on a couch at the team manager’s house before eventually being relocated to a hotel.

That difficult introduction is said to have set the tone for a tenure marked by disagreements over authority and football decisions.

Claims of interference in team selection

Among the most serious allegations surrounding Kaze’s spell are claims that he did not enjoy full control over team selection.

Reports suggest that in several matches he was not responsible for deciding the starting line-up, with team sheets allegedly handed to his assistants instead while pressure was placed on him to field those selections.

The coach was also reportedly warned that challenging decisions made by senior figures within the club was not acceptable, with one message allegedly making it clear that “you cannot challenge what the boss says here.”

Those claims, if substantiated, would raise significant questions about the level of autonomy afforded to the club’s head coach.

Suspension and mounting pressure

Kaze’s difficulties reportedly intensified after he declined to participate in certain friendly matches, a decision that allegedly resulted in an internal suspension.

Despite having a contract that reportedly included performance targets after 10 competitive matches, reports claim interference in his work began after only a handful of fixtures.

The pressure reportedly extended to high-profile encounters, with Kaze allegedly instructed that Sekhukhune had to defeat Orlando Pirates “at all costs” because the club had beaten the Soweto giants under the previous coach.

Rebuilding after key departures

Kaze is also said to have inherited a squad in transition.

Around six key players from the previous season reportedly departed before or during his tenure, forcing him to rebuild with the players available rather than working with an established core.

The coach is understood to have appealed for patience as he attempted to reshape the squad during a period of significant change.

Staff shortages added to challenges

Off-field issues reportedly extended beyond the playing squad.

Sekhukhune’s strength and conditioning coach left to join Tanzanian giants Simba SC, and despite Kaze repeatedly requesting a replacement, one was allegedly never appointed.

Instead, the Burundian coach reportedly had to assume some of those responsibilities himself while continuing to oversee the team’s football operations.

FIFA route remains a possibility

Reports indicate there were several serious behind-the-scenes disputes involving two individuals who were allegedly central to many of the problems experienced during Kaze’s tenure.

The former coach is now expected to seek the full value of his contract, and should negotiations fail, a complaint to FIFA remains a possibility.

It has also emerged that some fellow coaches reportedly cautioned Kaze before he accepted the Sekhukhune job, believing he had not conducted enough consultation about the club’s internal environment.

In hindsight, those advisers reportedly consider that decision to have been his biggest mistake.

For now, Sekhukhune United move on in search of a new head coach, while Kaze’s departure threatens to develop into a legal dispute that could cast further scrutiny on the circumstances surrounding his short-lived spell at the club.
