Rennes are making a determined push to sign Lucas Gourna-Douath, the highly-rated 21-year-old midfielder from Red Bull Salzburg, according to Foot Mercato.
With manager Jorge Sampaoli seeking a squad overhaul to reignite their season, the Ligue 1 side sees Gourna-Douath as a key piece in their winter recruitment strategy.
Having already brought in notable additions such as goalkeeper Brice Samba, and midfielder Seko Fofana. Rennes is now targeting Gourna-Douath to inject depth and quality into their midfield. This move comes after the departures of Albert Grønbæk and Baptiste Santamaria to Southampton and OGC Nice, respectively.
Gourna-Douath, a France U21 international with 23 appearances this season, emerged from Saint-Etienne’s academy before securing a €13 million move to Red Bull Salzburg in 2022. Tied to a contract with the Austrian club until 2027, he is seen as an ideal candidate to compete with Azor Matusiwa for a defensive midfield role.
Born in France with Central African Republic heritage, Gourna-Douath represents an exciting prospect for Rennes as they look to reshape their fortunes.
