Paul-Georges Ntep Impresses as Striker – A Permanent Move in Sight?
Paul-Georges Ntep continues to rise to the occasion — this time, not from the wings, but from the spearhead of Rennes’ attack. Reassigned to a striker role by coach Philippe Montanier in the match against RC Lens, the Cameroonian-born Frenchman responded in style, netting two decisive goals in a 2–0 win.
With Ola Toivonen unavailable for the upcoming clash against FC Metz, Ntep is likely to reprise this role on Saturday evening at the Stade Saint-Symphorien. Montanier, speaking on the club’s official website, didn’t shy away from praising the 22-year-old:
“It’s a possibility that he could play in this position. Paul showed he was interesting at Lens, especially when there’s space. He can play in all positions.”
Montanier also emphasized the value of attacking versatility:
“A central striker must know how to play on the wings and vice versa. The attacking play can evolve and disrupt the opponent more. He’s a plus for the team.”
A Long-Term Shift?
Ntep’s ability to stretch defenses with his pace and directness makes him a dangerous weapon through the middle, especially in transition-heavy situations. Though traditionally a winger, his skillset — intelligent movement, dribbling, and finishing — offers strong indications that he could thrive as a mobile central forward, particularly against high defensive lines.
As Rennes continue to experiment, the prospect of keeping Ntep at center-forward permanently seems increasingly viable. With more performances like the one against Lens, the decision may soon make itself.
