With his contract at Stade Rennais set to expire next June, Mehdi Zeffane has confirmed that he will not be renewing it. The 26-year-old Algerian right-back is eager to embrace a new challenge and explore opportunities outside France.

Zeffane, who has made 30 appearances and scored one goal across all competitions this season, expressed his desire to leave Rennes in pursuit of personal and professional growth. “It’s nice to feel the confidence of a coach who wants me to extend my contract at Rennes,” he told France Football. “Football offers us the opportunity to experience a lot of things. Right now, I’m more focused on the idea of going abroad. For the pleasure of playing elsewhere, of course, but also as a person, to discover another culture, another language.”

Having spent his career in France, including stints at Lyon and Rennes—two well-regarded Ligue 1 clubs—Zeffane believes he has achieved what he could domestically. “In France, I played for Lyon and Rennes, two very good Ligue 1 clubs. I think I’ve done all I can there, and at 26, I’m tempted by playing abroad,” he admitted, highlighting his readiness for a new adventure.

The right-back’s decision underscores a desire not only to test himself in a different footballing environment but also to grow personally through exposure to new cultures and languages. Rennes will now have to plan for life without one of their experienced defenders, while Zeffane looks forward to the next chapter of his career beyond Ligue 1.
