Jean II Makoun Set for Move to UAE Club Al Wasl
Cameroonian midfielder Jean II Makoun appears to be on the verge of a move to the United Arab Emirates, as reported by Footmercato on Thursday. The 31-year-old, currently at Stade Rennais, is expected to join Al Wasl, a top-tier club based in Dubai.
Makoun, who has featured just once for Rennes this season, is said to be out of favour at the Ligue 1 side. With limited playing time and no clear role under the current regime, the experienced midfielder has opted to seek new challenges abroad.
Sources close to the negotiations suggest that talks between Makoun’s representatives and Al Wasl are well advanced. With the Gulf region’s transfer window set to close at midnight, a deal could be concluded swiftly.
Should the transfer be finalised, it would mark another step in Makoun’s diverse career. The Cameroonian has previously played for top European clubs including Lille, Lyon, and Aston Villa, bringing experience and composure to midfield roles. He also earned over 60 caps for the Cameroon national team, participating in multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and two World Cups.
Al Wasl, one of the UAE’s more prominent clubs, has a history of attracting international talent—including a previous stint by football icon Diego Maradona as manager. Makoun’s arrival would bolster their midfield ranks and add a veteran presence as the club seeks domestic success.
With the deadline looming, all eyes now turn to Dubai for confirmation of the deal that could officially close the European chapter of Makoun’s career.
