Rennes hand contract extension to Senegalese coach Habib Beye following impressive turnaround
Stade Rennais have extended the contract of head coach Habib Beye by one year, with the possibility of an additional extension running through to 2028, according to reports from Ouest-France.
The Senegalese manager, who took charge in January, has made a striking impact in a short span of time. Initially brought in as a stopgap solution during a critical phase of the season, Beye has not only stabilised a struggling Rennes side but also won over both the dressing room and club hierarchy with his leadership and tactical acumen.
At the time of his appointment, Rennes were teetering dangerously close to the relegation zone, their campaign marred by inconsistency and a lack of cohesion on the pitch. But under Beye’s stewardship, the team underwent a dramatic revival.
By reintroducing discipline, clarity, and ambition to the squad, he managed to steer the club to a secure 12th-place finish — a position that seemed distant at the season’s midpoint.
His success did not go unnoticed. The club’s training ground at La Piverdière quickly became a place of renewed optimism, with Beye earning praise for instilling a clear identity and competitive spirit in his players.
Those inside the club describe a manager who has brought both calm and authority, traits that have been reflected in the team’s performances since the turn of the year.
Initially signed on a short-term deal running until June 2025, Beye’s contract included a clause that triggered an automatic extension in the event of the club avoiding relegation.
With that objective achieved with games to spare, the extension has now been activated. Furthermore, the club has added an option to extend his stay even further — potentially keeping him in Brittany until 2028.
For Beye, a former Olympique de Marseille defender who transitioned into coaching following a media career, the appointment marked his first major opportunity at the helm of a top-flight French side.
His approach has been noted for its balance between pragmatism and attacking intent, with Rennes showing greater organisation in defence and renewed flair going forward during the second half of the season.
The extension reflects both the board’s trust in his long-term vision and a desire to build continuity after what has been a turbulent few years for the club.
Rennes have cycled through several managers in recent seasons, and the emergence of Beye as a stabilising figure offers hope for a more settled period ahead.
As preparations begin for the 2025–26 campaign, Beye will now have the chance to shape the squad according to his own ideas and continue building on the foundations laid over the past six months.
Supporters will be watching closely to see whether this new chapter can deliver not only further stability, but also push the club back toward the European places in the coming seasons.
