Late Defeat Stings as Rennes Striker Habibou Reflects on Missed Opportunity
Rennes forward Mahamadou Habibou expressed frustration after his side suffered a last-minute 2–1 defeat to Bordeaux in Ligue 1, despite a spirited performance that had seemingly earned them a share of the spoils.
The 27-year-old, making just his third league appearance this season, believed he had helped rescue a point when he found the net late in the second half. But a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Bordeaux left Rennes empty-handed.
Speaking to beIN Sports after the match, Habibou lamented his team’s inability to capitalise on their chances. “We had a lot of opportunities to score but we weren’t able to capitalize,” he said. “We played well with the ball today. There was a minute left when Bordeaux scored—we need to play with more maturity.”
Rennes, who now sit 13th in the Ligue 1 table with eight points, showed attacking intent throughout the contest but were undone by lapses in concentration at both ends of the pitch. Habibou, however, struck a note of resilience in his post-match comments: “It’s a difficult defeat to accept. There are times like that… But after the storm comes the good weather.”
With more than two-thirds of the season ahead, Rennes will look to regroup quickly as they aim to convert performances into points and climb the table.
