Renato Veiga: Real Madrid Linked with Move for Villarreal’s Portugal Defender

Renato Veiga, the Portugal international centre-back at Villarreal, is being linked with a move to La Liga champions Real Madrid as the Spanish giants assess options to strengthen the left side of their defence.

The 22-year-old, who can operate as a left-footed central defender, is under contract at Villarreal until 30 June 2032, meaning any transfer would require Madrid to negotiate a substantial fee. Veiga currently has a market valuation of around €30 million, positioning him in a price bracket consistent with Madrid’s recent policy of investing in players entering their prime years.

Veiga joined Villarreal on 22 August 2025 and has quickly established himself in Spain, with his World Cup 2026 performances for Portugal enhancing his reputation. He started all five of his country’s matches at the tournament, contributing one assist and playing every available minute while picking up two yellow cards.

Born in Lisbon and standing at 1.88m, Veiga’s emergence at international level has been underlined by silverware, having been part of the Portugal squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2025. At club level he already has European pedigree after lifting the UEFA Europa Conference League with Chelsea in the 2024-25 season before his move to Villarreal.

With such a long contract in place at Estadio de la Ceramica and Villarreal in a strong negotiating position, any approach from Real Madrid is likely to be complex. For now, Veiga remains a key defensive figure for Villarreal, tied to the club for the next six years.
