Renaldo Leaner gives Kaizer Chiefs confidence during Brandon Petersen absence
Renaldo Leaner has given Kaizer Chiefs a reliable alternative in goal after making a composed debut in the absence of captain Brandon Petersen.
The 28-year-old kept a clean sheet as Kaizer Chiefs drew 0-0 with Lamontville Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on 20 September 2026, helping the club maintain their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
Leaner was brought into the side after Petersen suffered a left-knee medial collateral ligament injury in training on 15 September. His first appearance suggested Kaizer Chiefs can cope with the captain’s absence while he recovers.
Petersen is expected to be out for approximately four to six weeks, the club confirmed in an official announcement on 16 September. That projected a return between mid and late October.
Although reports in early October indicated that Petersen was recovering well and could return sooner than initially expected, Kaizer Chiefs have not altered the original timeframe. His comeback remains subject to medical clearance.
Leaner makes immediate impression
Leaner produced two important close-range saves against Lamontville Golden Arrows and played a central role in preserving the point for Kaizer Chiefs.
He also showed confidence in dealing with crosses, regularly leaving his line to collect or punch the ball clear. The 1.87m goalkeeper’s decision-making helped ensure that the Glamour Boys’ goal remained intact throughout the 90 minutes.
His opportunity came after a period of patience. The Western Cape-born goalkeeper, who is from Elsie’s River, joined Kaizer Chiefs in July 2026 when his contract with Sekhukhune United expired and was not renewed.
Two days after signing, he travelled with the squad to the club’s Spain preseason camp. He then waited three months for the chance to play in the famous gold and black jersey.
“It was really exciting for me to play my first game because it has always been a dream for me to play for Kaizer Chiefs, one of the biggest teams in South Africa,” Leaner said.
“I was able to make those saves because I went into the game with confidence and was very focused, which made me ready for action,” he added.
Stellenbosch next for Amakhosi
Kaizer Chiefs did not play during the October FIFA international break, with domestic action set to resume on 13 October.
The Glamour Boys will host Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium at 19:30. Petersen is still expected to miss that fixture, leaving Leaner in line to retain his place in goal.
Kaizer Chiefs currently sit fourth in the Betway Premiership standings and will be aiming to move higher. Based on his assured first appearance, Leaner appears prepared to continue carrying the responsibility while Petersen remains sidelined.
