The Nigeria Premier Football League has handed down a heavy sanction to Remo Stars, slapping the club with a $4,924 fine over serious security failures during their Matchday 20 encounter against Ikorodu City.
The decision follows unsavoury scenes that unfolded after the final whistle, when clashes broke out between supporters of both teams. Reports from the incident indicate that several visiting fans sustained injuries, while properties were vandalised in the aftermath of the confrontation. Following a thorough review, the NPFL concluded that Remo Stars did not put sufficient security arrangements in place to ensure the safety of all stakeholders at the venue.
In its ruling, the league body stressed that clubs are responsible for maintaining order and providing a secure environment for players, match officials, and supporters alike. The failure to meet these standards during the Ikorodu City fixture formed the basis for the disciplinary action.
Beyond the financial penalty, the NPFL has also imposed a significant sporting sanction. Remo Stars have been ordered to relocate their remaining home fixtures for the rest of the season. As a result, the club will no longer play at its regular home ground and will instead host matches at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
The league has, however, left the door open for a possible review of the punishment. Remo Stars have been granted 48 hours to lodge an appeal if they wish to contest either the fine or the venue relocation directive.
The sanctions serve as a strong reminder of the NPFL’s stance on safety and crowd control, as the league continues efforts to curb violence and improve matchday security across Nigerian football.
