Referee analyst sparks debate over disputed Pyramids goal
A fresh wave of controversy has hit the Egyptian Premier League after top refereeing analyst Tawfiq Al-Sayed strongly challenged the decision to allow Pyramids’ goal in their clash with Zamalek.
The goal, scored in the 21st minute by Ibrahim Adel, came after a handling error by Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad. But Al-Sayed insists the goal should not have stood.
According to the veteran expert, Pyramids forward Marwan Hamdy was in an offside position when the ball rebounded off Awad. More critically, Al-Sayed argued that Hamdy’s positioning had a clear influence on the play and on the Zamalek goalkeeper’s ability to recover.
Al-Sayed stated the situation required a proper review through video technology, something he believes would have led to the goal being disallowed.
His comments have stirred up intense reactions from fans and pundits, reigniting the debate on the use and accuracy of VAR in crucial league matches.
Pyramids is second on the league table while Zamalek is third.
