‘Really disappointed’ Robert Sanchez responded professionally to Aston Villa dropping – Liam Rosenior

Chelsea F.C. goalkeeper Robert Sánchez was left ‘really disappointed’ after head coach Liam Rosenior opted to leave him out of the starting lineup for the club’s emphatic 4-1 Premier League victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday, but the Spaniard has since earned praise for the manner in which he handled the setback.

Sanchez, who has been a regular presence between the posts for Chelsea this season, was replaced in the starting XI by Danish goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen following a difficult outing in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.

The decision proved effective on the night, with Chelsea delivering a commanding performance to secure all three points at Stamford Bridge.

Despite the disappointment of losing his place, Rosenior revealed that the Spanish shot-stopper responded in exemplary fashion behind the scenes. The Chelsea boss highlighted Sanchez’s professionalism and his willingness to support his teammate, even after being dropped from the side.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming FA Cup tie against Wrexham, Rosenior said the goalkeeper’s reaction reflected the mentality he expects from every member of the squad.

He explained: “I’ve been really honest with Rob. He was really disappointed not to play, which is what I expect from every player, whether they’re a goalkeeper or an outfield player.

“But the way Rob responded in training, the way he supported Filip – in the warm-up, in the dressing room – was magnificent.”

Rosenior’s decision also sheds light on his broader approach to squad selection, particularly in the goalkeeping department where competition remains intense. While Sanchez has produced several strong displays for Chelsea this campaign, the manager appears determined to ensure that no position is guaranteed.

Discussing whether he has a No.1 goalkeeper, Rosenior added: “For me, genuinely, I look at the goalkeeper position differently for each game. I want there to be competition in every area of the pitch.

“I know, traditionally, if there’s a change of goalkeeper, people assume he’s now the number one. That’s not the case. We will pick – and I will pick – the best team for each game.

“Filip hasn’t been waiting – he’s been working for his opportunity. I thought he took it really, really well. But Rob has put in great performances as well.”

Jorgensen’s performance against Aston Villa could intensify the selection debate ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures, including their FA Cup encounter with Wrexham.
