Real Madrid step up chase for Atalanta wonderkid Honest Ahanor
Real Madrid have reportedly intensified their pursuit of Atalanta’s rising star Honest Ahanor, with scouts from the Spanish giants closely monitoring the teenage defender’s rapid development in Serie A.
According to Sky Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, the 18-year-old has emerged as a primary target for Los Blancos as they look to rejuvenate their defensive line ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.
The interest from the reigning European champions comes as no surprise given Ahanor’s meteoric rise since joining Atalanta from Genoa last summer.
The left-footed stopper, who is comfortable playing as a traditional center-back or as a wing-back, has drawn widespread praise for his composure on the ball and his ability to initiate attacks from the back.
Analysts have already begun comparing his physical presence and tactical intelligence to legendary Italian defenders, marking him as one of the most promising prospects in European football.
Real Madrid’s scouting department has reportedly been impressed by Ahanor’s seamless transition into Gian Piero Gasperini’s demanding tactical system.
Despite his young age, the Italian youth international of Nigerian descent has displayed a maturity beyond his years, particularly in high-stakes UEFA Champions League fixtures.
Madrid see the teenager as a potential long-term successor to their aging defensive stalwarts, fits their recent policy of recruiting the world’s best young talent before their market value becomes prohibitive.
However, securing Ahanor’s signature will not be straightforward. Atalanta, known for their shrewdness in the transfer market, currently have the defender tied down to a long-term contract until 2028.
While his current market valuation sits around €25 million, the Bergamo-based club is expected to demand a fee closer to €60 million to even consider parting with their “untouchable” asset.
Furthermore, Real Madrid are not alone in their admiration. Premier League heavyweights including Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea are also said to be keeping tabs on the player.
