Brazilian football sensation and Real Madrid winger Vinícius Jr. has traced his ancestry to Cameroon through a DNA test, unveiling a profound connection to the Tikar tribe.

The test, conducted as part of the Brazilian Football Confederation’s (CBF) Roots of Gold campaign in collaboration with AfricanAncestry.com, revealed Vinícius’ Cameroonian heritage during an event on November 19, 2024, at Fonte Nova. The campaign aims to celebrate the history and pride of Afro-Brazilian communities, with football as a focal point.

A certificate recognizing Vinícius Jr.’s Cameroonian lineage was presented to him, alongside a video highlighting the rich legacy of the Tikar tribe, a prominent group in Cameroon.

Speaking about the discovery, the star forward expressed deep pride:

“Discovering that my roots are in Cameroon is a very special moment for me and my family. It reminds me that, despite the challenges, our origins and our history count for a lot.”

Vinícius’ father also reflected on the importance of understanding one’s heritage:

“It’s important for us to know where we come from. Many Brazilians are unaware of their ancestry or heritage. I’m happy that we have roots in Cameroon too.”

Gina Paige, founder and president of AfricanAncestry.com, emphasized the broader significance of reconnecting individuals of African descent with their origins:

“Vini Jr. carries within him the desire to honour his heritage. However, like many individuals of African descent, his ancestral story has been erased by racism and the legacy of slavery. Through a DNA test, we discovered that Vini Jr.’s ancestors belong to the Tikar tribe in Cameroon.

“We believe that Vini’s reconnection with his African roots is a powerful ‘act of resistance,’ in line with his advocacy for social justice both on and off the football pitch,” Paige added.

This discovery adds another layer to the legacy of Vinícius Jr., underscoring his ties to Africa while celebrating the cultural bridge between his Brazilian identity and his Cameroonian roots.
