Real Madrid set to sign Ibrahima Konate on Thursday
Real Madrid are poised to officially announce Ibrahima Konate as their latest signing this Thursday, with the French centre-back joining on a free transfer after his Liverpool contract expires.
President Florentino Perez is expected to make the announcement tomorrow, according to The Athletic.
Konate’s departure from Liverpool comes after lengthy renewal talks that began in October 2024 ultimately failed to produce an agreement.
“This isn’t an easy goodbye, but it’s time for a new challenge and a new chapter,” the defender told Liverpool fans when confirming his exit. The 27-year-old made 183 appearances for the Reds and earned 27 France caps during his Anfield tenure.
Real Madrid initially cooled their interest in the defender late last year but reignited their pursuit, driven by defensive holes left by David Alaba’s departure and Eder Militão’s four-month hamstring injury. Incoming manager Jose Mourinho identified centre-back as a priority, and Konate’s Premier League experience represents significant quality at zero transfer cost.
The announcement arrives just three days before Sunday’s presidential election, adding political weight to the sporting decision.
