Real Madrid set to extend Arda Guler’s contract until 2031

Real Madrid have reached an agreement in principle to renew Arda Guler’s contract, rewarding the Turkey international’s rapid progress and strengthening their plans to keep him at the club for the long term.

According to AS on Thursday, the new deal is expected to run until 2031 and will include an improved salary. The agreement is due to take effect from the beginning of the current season.

Guler joined Real Madrid in summer 2023 as an 18-year-old still adapting to a new environment. Since then, he has gradually developed into an important member of the squad, prompting the club to reassess the financial terms of the contract he originally signed.

That initial agreement was due to keep him at Real Madrid until 30 June 2029. However, the club now believes the deal no longer reflects either his standing within the team or the importance of his role.

The decision also comes as Guler becomes increasingly central to Jose Mourinho’s plans. The manager has preferred to use him in a more advanced position, closer to the opposition penalty area, rather than as a deep-lying central midfielder.

Mourinho believes Guler’s attacking qualities can have a greater impact in the final third, a view he has communicated to the club’s leadership. There is reportedly strong satisfaction at Real Madrid with the player’s performances, commitment, work and development.

The central midfield role, meanwhile, is expected to be contested more directly by Bernardo Silva, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni.

Real Madrid’s move may also be intended to protect Guler from interest among Premier League clubs, particularly Chelsea.

Reports have suggested that Xabi Alonso, who previously coached Guler and gave him the opportunity to make an appearance for Real Madrid, is considering making a significant offer for the young Turkey international during the January transfer window.

Guler’s statistics last season underlined the progress he had made. He played 51 matches, scoring six goals and providing 14 assists.

His influence has continued into the current campaign. He has appeared in all four of Real Madrid’s La Liga matches, scoring once and setting up another goal. He missed the club’s UEFA Champions League fixture through suspension.
