Real Madrid secure Sergio Martinez deal after fending off rival interest

Real Madrid have reached an agreement to sign 19-year-old Racing Santander midfielder Sergio Martinez Montero, despite late efforts from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and clubs from England, Germany and Saudi Arabia to change his decision.

Martinez is regarded as one of the most promising young players to emerge from Spanish football. He attracted attention after making his Racing Santander first-team debut last season, when the club were still competing in the Spanish second tier.

The midfielder was given the opportunity to leave during the most recent winter transfer window, but chose to remain with Racing Santander until the end of the campaign. His decision was rewarded when the club secured promotion to La Liga.

Martinez has continued to make an impression since Racing Santander’s return to the top flight. He scored in their 2-2 draw with Villarreal in the opening round of La Liga, further increasing interest in his progress.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Real Madrid have agreed a contract with Martinez that will run until 2030. The report said the player is expected initially to join Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s reserve side, while also having the possibility of training with the first team.

That arrangement would give Martinez the chance to develop within Real Madrid’s structure and work under the observation of the first-team coaching staff led by Jose Mourinho.

Martinez first began appearing regularly for Racing Santander’s senior side during the final part of last season. He made 10 appearances in the Spanish second division as the club pushed towards promotion.

AS reported that Real Madrid’s stature and the possibility of progressing into the first team were decisive factors in Martinez’s choice. The midfielder remained committed to moving to the Santiago Bernabeu, even as other clubs presented alternative proposals.

Racing Santander and the player received a series of approaches in recent days from clubs seeking to take the midfielder elsewhere. Those interested parties included Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal, as well as unnamed clubs from the Premier League, the Bundesliga and the Saudi Pro League.

The approaches did not alter Martinez’s position. He preferred to continue with his plan to wear the Real Madrid shirt and rejected the possibility of changing destination despite the offers available to him.

Real Madrid also chose not to activate the €3m release clause in Martinez’s contract. Instead, the club negotiated directly with Racing Santander in an effort to avoid tension during the discussions and protect its relationship with the Spanish side in the future.

The agreement represents an important step in Real Madrid’s plans for one of Spain’s emerging midfield talents, although Martinez is expected to begin his time at the club with Castilla before competing for opportunities around the senior squad.
