Real Madrid say goodbye to David Alaba

Real Madrid have officially closed the door on David Alaba, confirming that the Austrian international will leave the club when his contract expires on 30 June.

The 33‑year‑old defender receives a final farewell at the Bernabéu this Saturday, as the club honors a player beloved by teammates and staff for his professionalism and big‑match impact.

Alaba arrived on a free transfer from Bayern Munich in 2021 and quickly became one of Carlo Ancelotti’s trusted figures, playing a key role in Real’s sensational 2022 Champions League run of dramatic comebacks against Paris Saint‑Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City. That campaign ended with a victory over Liverpool and a 14th European crown, an image often tied to the sight of Alaba swirling a chair in celebration during the Paris comeback.

Over five seasons he made 131 appearances and lifted 11 trophies, including two Champions Leagues and two Liga titles, yet injuries limited his consistency and left some wondering what more he might have achieved.

In its statement, the club said: “Real Madrid wishes to express all its gratitude and affection to a player who was part of one of the most glorious periods in our history.” It added: “David Alaba leaves with the affection of all Madridistas for his commitment, work and iconic image in our path to the Fourteenth. Real Madrid will always be his home.”
