Real Madrid reach agreement with Vinicius Junior over new contract

Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Vinicius Junior to renew his contract after negotiations lasting about 18 months.

The Athletic reports that the Spanish club improved its financial offer to the Brazil forward, although the exact terms have not been disclosed. An official announcement confirming the extension is expected in the coming period.

Talks had stalled for a lengthy spell, with Real Madrid eventually increasing their proposal in an effort to secure Vinicius Junior’s future at the club. The agreement brings an end to uncertainty over the 26-year-old’s next move.

Vinicius had been open to joining Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli Saudi if discussions over a new deal with Real Madrid broke down. However, the European club succeeded in resolving the issue in its favour and is now expected to retain one of its most important players.

The forward joined Real Madrid from Flamengo in the summer of 2018 and has since developed into one of the team’s leading stars. He recently returned to training with the club as preparations continued for the new season, following his involvement with Brazil at the World Cup.

Vinicius scored four goals in five matches during the tournament. His return to the Real Madrid squad comes during an especially active summer transfer window for the club, which has also seen Jose Mourinho return as manager alongside the arrival of several new players to strengthen the squad.

Since moving to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2018, Vinicius has made 375 appearances for Real Madrid. He has scored 128 goals and provided 100 assists during that time.

His record includes a major contribution to a number of the club’s trophies, among them three La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League triumphs.

Despite those achievements, Vinicius has faced criticism from some supporters in recent months as the team’s results have declined. That reaction has added significance to the decision over his future, with the new agreement set to keep him at Real Madrid after the club fought to prevent the possibility of his departure to Saudi Arabia.

The final details of the contract have not been made public, and Real Madrid are yet to formally announce the renewal. However, the agreement reported by The Athletic means Vinicius is expected to continue his career with the Spanish giants.
