Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa has thrown his support behind Moroccan international Brahim Diaz following his difficult experience in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
Diaz endured a frustrating night as Morocco lost 1-0 to Senegal after extra time, with the match overshadowed by controversy and missed chances. Despite the disappointment, Arbeloa was quick to underline the attacking midfielder’s importance and quality, insisting his overall tournament deserved recognition rather than criticism.
Speaking at a press conference after Real Madrid’s emphatic 6-1 victory over Monaco in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, Arbeloa praised Diaz, stressing that the Moroccan played a decisive role in Morocco’s run to the final.
“He played an exceptional tournament. Morocco reached the final, and a large percentage of the time they played in the final was thanks to him. I have a great desire to welcome him and give him a warm hug,” Arbeloa said.
The Real Madrid coach went on to highlight Diaz’s versatility and technical strengths, making it clear that the club remains fully confident in him.
“Ibrahim is a player with many qualities and attributes, capable of playing in our style in many positions. We will not train today, but he will be with us in Thursday’s training,” he added.
Arbeloa concluded by emphasising the unity within the squad and the support awaiting Diaz upon his return.
“His teammates are also waiting for him, anticipating his return to give him a warm hug and to support him, and this is what gives me confidence for the future,” he said.
