Real Madrid prepare talks with Thibaut Courtois over 2028 contract

Real Madrid are preparing to open talks with Thibaut Courtois over extending his contract by a further season, which would keep the Belgium goalkeeper at Santiago Bernabeu until the summer of 2028.

Courtois, 34, has established himself as one of the key figures in the Real Madrid team in recent years and remains a central part of the club’s plans, rather than being important only during the current campaign.

His latest performance came in Real Madrid’s Champions League match against Inter Milan, when he made seven saves to help the club secure three valuable points at the beginning of their European campaign.

The Belgium international renewed his contract with Real Madrid last summer, committing him to the club until 2027. However, Belgian media reports that negotiations are expected to resume in the coming period, with the intention of adding another year to the agreement.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reports that the discussions are unlikely to encounter significant difficulties, with both Courtois and Real Madrid keen to continue their relationship.

Courtois wants to remain with the Spanish club, while Real Madrid are equally determined to retain him. That mutual commitment was also evident during the previous renewal, which Courtois announced himself at a time when there was speculation about his future at the club.

Courtois’ Belgium future remains uncertain

Courtois has also declined to play for Belgium and will miss two matches against France. It remains unclear whether that decision is permanent or temporary.

At the same time, Real Madrid officials have continued to monitor the goalkeeper market. The club is aware that it will eventually need to find a successor to Courtois and has been assessing possible options for that stage.

Several goalkeepers have been linked with Real Madrid in recent months. Nevertheless, the club’s hierarchy recognises the scale of the challenge ahead, given how difficult it would be to replace a player of Courtois’ stature.

The Belgian has become one of Real Madrid’s most important pillars over the past few seasons, making succession planning a particularly significant issue for the club. While the club continues to examine the market, its immediate priority is to secure Courtois’ services for longer.

A new agreement would extend his stay at Santiago Bernabeu by one additional year and maintain the current partnership between the goalkeeper and Real Madrid beyond his existing 2027 contract.
