Real Madrid monitor Manchester City case as Haaland and other stars face uncertain futures

Real Madrid and several leading European clubs are watching developments in Manchester City’s financial case, with the club still awaiting a decision on the possible punishment after being found guilty of 114 of 115 alleged breaches covering the period from 2009 to 2018.

No sanction has yet been confirmed, while Manchester City are preparing to appeal. The uncertainty has increased attention on the futures of several players, particularly if the outcome has a significant impact on the club’s sporting and financial plans.

According to The Athletic, the possible penalties range from fines and points deductions to more severe measures that could affect Manchester City’s continued participation in the Premier League.

A substantial punishment could have consequences for the club’s squad and finances, prompting major European sides to monitor the situation. Real Madrid are among those most closely linked to the case, having previously been associated with several Manchester City players.

Haaland remains the leading name

Erling Haaland is the most prominent player connected with Real Madrid’s interest. The Spanish club tried to sign the Norway forward before he joined Manchester City in 2022.

However, a move away from the Etihad Stadium does not currently appear to be under consideration. Haaland has a long-term contract with Manchester City until 2034 and does not have a relegation release clause.

A transfer to Real Madrid would also be complicated by the presence of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and other attacking options. Any potential deal would therefore depend on several factors rather than the outcome of the case alone.

Cherki and Gvardiol also being monitored

Ryan Cherki is another player to have attracted Real Madrid’s attention. He was on the club’s radar before moving to Manchester City and is regarded as one of the outstanding young talents in European football.

Josko Gvardiol has also been linked with interest from major clubs, although his departure would not be straightforward. The defender renewed his Manchester City contract this summer, extending it until 2031.

Three players City signed ahead of Madrid

Real Madrid’s interest in the wider situation is also connected to three players who had been targets for the Spanish club before joining Manchester City this summer: Ayoub Bouaddi, Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez.

Even a severe punishment would not automatically lead to the departure of Manchester City’s leading players. The club has not yet received its final sanction, and the legal process and any appeal could continue for a considerable period.

The futures of those players will therefore depend on the eventual findings and penalties in the case, rather than simply on the existing verdict.
