Real Madrid have stepped up interest in Manchester United’s rising star Kobbie Mainoo, opening talks with his representatives at a time when Chelsea have cooled their pursuit.
The Spanish giants see an opportunity to test United’s resolve following uncertainty about the youngster’s long-term role under new manager Ruben Amorim.
Mainoo, who is of Ghanaian heritage but represents England at international level, is said to be weighing his options after being told by Amorim that his only pathway into the regular starting XI would come at the expense of club captain Bruno Fernandes.
That assessment has raised questions over his development and first-team opportunities at Old Trafford.
Reports from the Daily Mail indicate that both Real Madrid and rivals Atletico Madrid have been alerted to Mainoo’s growing frustration.
The prospect of the 20-year-old making a switch to La Liga has gained traction in recent days, given Madrid’s ongoing policy of recruiting Europe’s most promising talents.
Interest in Mainoo, however, is not limited to Spain. Sources suggest as many as ten clubs have made contact with his agents, with a significant portion of suitors emerging from the Premier League.
Clubs across the continent view him as one of the brightest young midfielders available this summer.
Chelsea were among the first to position themselves for a potential deal, making initial enquiries towards the end of last season. But their stance has since shifted, with the Blues choosing to prioritise reinforcements in other areas of the squad rather than pursuing Mainoo further.
