Griezmann Defends Benzema Amid Ongoing Transfer Speculation
As has become a regular feature of the summer transfer window, Karim Benzema once again found himself at the centre of intense speculation over his Real Madrid future. This year, Arsenal were among the clubs reportedly interested in the French striker. Yet, when the window closed, Benzema remained a Madridista—unchanged and unfazed.
Speaking in his defence, compatriot and fellow French international Antoine Griezmann offered firm support. The Atlético Madrid forward dismissed the ongoing doubts surrounding Benzema’s role at Real Madrid and emphasised the striker’s enduring quality.
“Benzema is used to being questioned. Every year, we wonder if he’s going to leave for another club, if he has the level to play for Real Madrid… But he has the level for that and for more,” Griezmann said in an interview with Onda Cero radio.
The comments come at a time when comparisons between the two French forwards have grown. Griezmann, 24, has made a strong start to the new La Liga season with two matches and a goal already under his belt. Last season, he outscored Benzema in league play, netting 22 goals—his personal best and a clear signal of his growing stature in Spanish football.
While Benzema’s consistency and link-up play have long made him a key component of Real Madrid’s forward line, his goal-scoring record has often been scrutinised, especially when measured against elite strikers across Europe. Nevertheless, he remains a trusted figure at the Bernabéu, backed by successive managers and a loyal core of supporters.
For Griezmann, the constant speculation about Benzema’s future is both predictable and undeserved.
“He’s a top player, and he proves it every season, regardless of the criticism,” he added.
As the new season unfolds, both players will look to make their mark in La Liga and on the international stage. But while Griezmann continues to rise, his words remind fans and critics alike that Benzema’s class—though often questioned—has never truly been in doubt.
