Real Madrid gives Bernabeu facade a fresh commercial identity

Real Madrid has begun changing the appearance of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, with workers installing only the name “Bernabeu” on the facade facing Paseo de la Castellana, rather than the full “Santiago Bernabeu” title that had been displayed there for years.

The move is understood to form part of the club’s wider commercial strategy as it continues to reshape the identity and external appearance of its stadium.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported that work on the facade has not yet been completed. The final position of the Real Madrid crest remains undecided, while a new logo linked to the stadium appears likely to be placed above the “Bernabeu” lettering.

The change has prompted a reaction from some Real Madrid members, who oppose using only the former president’s surname instead of the full name “Santiago Bernabeu”. There is also concern among some members that the club crest may not appear on the completed facade.

For those members, the crest is regarded as one of the most important symbols of the stadium’s identity. Its possible absence has therefore become a significant point of discussion as the work progresses.

The shortened wording represents a visible change from the name that had been used on the facade for many years. It also comes as Real Madrid continues a major transformation of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, designed to strengthen its role not only as a football venue but also as a sports, entertainment and commercial destination.

The stadium has undergone extensive redevelopment, with commercial considerations given greater prominence in both its identity and its external design. The changes to the Castellana-facing side are part of that broader evolution.

The latest branding has appeared before the club has settled every detail of the facade. In particular, it remains unclear whether the Real Madrid crest will be retained and how the stadium’s own new logo will be integrated with the lettering.

That uncertainty has added to the debate among members, who are examining whether the updated exterior sufficiently reflects the history of the venue and its association with Santiago Bernabeu.

The former Real Madrid president, whose name has been linked with the stadium for decades, remains represented in the shortened “Bernabeu” title. However, replacing the full wording has led some members to question the direction of the club’s new visual identity.

Real Madrid’s stadium redevelopment is intended to give the venue a stronger presence beyond matchdays, with its sporting, entertainment and business functions playing a larger role. The facade changes indicate how that commercial focus is now being reflected in the stadium’s most visible public image.
