Real Madrid fine Raul Asencio almost €100,000 after legal case

Real Madrid have imposed a fine of almost €100,000 on Raul Asencio after concluding that his recent legal problems damaged the club’s reputation.

The sum will be deducted from the defender’s salary over the coming months, according to Spanish website Defensa Central, which reported that the disciplinary action had already been communicated to the player.

“Asensio has already received the financial penalty from Real Madrid following the disciplinary case opened against him. The amount is close to 100,000 euros,” the report said.

The club’s decision comes despite Asencio being given the chance to return to competitive football. Having recovered from his injury, he has been included by Jose Mourinho in the squad for Saturday’s match against Rayo Vallecano.

It is the player’s first call-up of the season and represents an immediate opportunity to resume his career on the pitch.

However, Real Madrid’s disciplinary response reflects the seriousness with which it has viewed the incident. The club considered not only the traffic offence committed by Asencio, but also what it regarded as the considerable harm caused to its public image.

The timing of the offence was a key factor in the decision to impose a severe punishment. Asencio was stopped while driving his car in the middle of the night, behaviour Real Madrid considered irresponsible for a professional footballer.

The club has therefore adopted a two-track response. Mourinho has made Asencio available for selection and given him the opportunity to prove himself again in sporting terms, while Real Madrid has made clear internally that conduct which harms its reputation will not be overlooked.

That stance applies even when the player involved is regarded as one of the club’s own.

Asencio must now concentrate on competing for his place after his absence. He faces strong competition for his position and will also have to deal with the financial impact of the punishment, which will leave him almost 100,000 euros short in his bank account.
