Real Madrid fans demand Mourinho changes after Atletico derby defeat

Real Madrid supporters and sections of the Spanish media are calling for significant changes to Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up after the club’s 2-1 defeat by Atletico de Madrid in the capital derby.

The result has intensified concerns that Mourinho’s arrival, along with the team’s new signings, has so far failed to resolve the problems that affected Real Madrid last season.

Spanish media reports say the criticism is focused on three main areas: the recent form of Vinicius Junior, the way Bernardo Silva and Carlos Espi are being used, and the team’s wider attacking struggles. Real Madrid have been criticised for a lack of creativity, reduced effectiveness in front of goal and a lack of understanding between their forward players.

Vinicius under pressure

Vinicius Junior is currently the most prominent target of criticism in Madrid after a drop in form in recent weeks, despite having signed a new contract with Real Madrid.

According to AS, there is growing support for Yan Diomande to be given a starting role on the left flank. The Ivory Coast player’s performances have strengthened the argument that he should be involved more regularly, while the possibility of Vinicius starting on the bench is now being openly discussed by supporters and the media.

The calls for change also extend to Bernardo Silva. AS believes the Portugal international should be given greater responsibility, particularly in important matches, because of his ability to add creativity to Real Madrid’s midfield and create opportunities for the forwards.

Carlos Espi is another player whose role is attracting increased attention. He has decided two matches for Real Madrid this season, against Espanyol and Elche, but Mourinho did not use him in the latest meeting with Atletico de Madrid.

That decision has added to questions about the Portuguese manager’s handling of his attacking options. There is also growing debate about how the minutes are being shared in the forward line, with Kylian Mbappe rarely being substituted.

The discussion has therefore broadened beyond the derby defeat and individual performances. Supporters and media observers are questioning whether Mourinho should alter the established structure of his starting XI, with Bernardo Silva and Carlos Espi viewed as players who could be given more opportunities and Vinicius facing pressure to retain his place.
