Real Madrid end pursuit of English-Ivorian defender Marc Guehi over ‘impossible’ wage demands

Real Madrid have reportedly ended their pursuit of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi after being deterred by the England international’s high wage demands.

Guehi, who was born in Côte d’Ivoire before representing England at international level, has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders.

His leadership at Palace and composed performances have attracted attention from several of Europe’s elite clubs.

The 25-year-old was close to joining Liverpool during the final days of the summer transfer window, but Crystal Palace withdrew from negotiations at the last moment.

With his contract expiring at the end of the season, Guehi is now expected to leave Selhurst Park either in January or as a free agent next summer.

According to reports from AS, Real Madrid viewed Guehi as a potential long-term solution to their defensive issues, particularly given the persistent injuries to Éder Militão and David Alaba.

However, his salary expectations are said to have made the deal “virtually impossible” for the Spanish club.

The decision effectively removes Madrid from the race, leaving Liverpool and Bayern Munich as the frontrunners for his signature.

Both clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation closely and could return with concrete offers in January.

Liverpool have long admired Guehi’s ability to read the game and his comfort playing out from the back—qualities that align with Arne Slot’s defensive philosophy.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, are seeking defensive reinforcements as they prepare for potential departures in the summer.

Guehi, who has made over 100 appearances for Crystal Palace since joining from Chelsea in 2021, has been one of the club’s standout performers this season.

His calmness under pressure and growing international pedigree make him a highly sought-after figure on the transfer market.

With interest from top European sides intensifying, Guehi’s next move could define the next stage of his career—one that may yet take him to football’s highest level.
