Real Madrid deal could send Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo to Liverpool

Liverpool have accelerated plans to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo after Ibrahima Konate’s move to Real Madrid left a significant gap in their defence.

The Premier League club have made a new centre-back their immediate priority, ahead of strengthening at right-back, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano. Liverpool have intensified their efforts over the past 24 to 48 hours and have identified Araujo as their preferred target.

The Uruguay international has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time, but Barcelona’s previous circumstances made a move difficult. That situation has changed during the current summer transfer window, allowing Liverpool to make a stronger approach for a player they have long admired.

Araujo is expected to join Liverpool on a season-long loan. The English club would cover his full salary, understood to be about €11m net, while the agreement would include an option for Liverpool to buy him permanently at the end of the campaign. That clause would not oblige them to complete the transfer.

For Barcelona, allowing Araujo to leave, even temporarily, would provide important financial relief. The Catalan club would no longer have to pay the defender’s wages, creating additional room under the salary cap at a crucial point in the transfer market.

The move could also offer Araujo the chance to rebuild his position in first-team football. His role in Barcelona’s plans has diminished and a spell at Liverpool would give him the opportunity to play more regularly in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.

Konate departure creates defensive need

Liverpool’s interest in Araujo is directly linked to Real Madrid’s earlier move for Konate. The French defender’s departure has weakened Liverpool’s defensive options, particularly with Joe Gomez continuing to experience fitness problems.

Giovanni Leoni is also recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, while there are concerns about the readiness of Jeremy Jacquet. As a result, Virgil van Dijk is almost the only experienced defender currently available to Liverpool at full capacity.

That situation has encouraged the club’s hierarchy to move quickly in the transfer market. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez therefore features indirectly in the deal: his decision to bring Konate to the Spanish club created the vacancy that Liverpool now need to fill, potentially with one of Barcelona’s defenders.

Araujo is expected to visit Barcelona’s training ground before travelling to England for a medical and to complete the formalities of his move. Liverpool would then be able to confirm the transfer officially.

The defender would give Liverpool a combination of physical strength, experience and versatility. Although primarily a centre-back, Araujo can also operate at right-back when required, adding further flexibility to the squad.

Barcelona, meanwhile, would gain greater room within financial fair play regulations by removing one of their highest earners from the wage bill. That could help the club pursue other reinforcements while continuing its activity in the transfer market.

Other media reports have suggested that Barcelona are considering Tottenham defender Cristian Romero or Aymeric Laporte of Athletic Club as potential replacements for Araujo. The need to recruit in that position was not part of the club’s original plans, but Konate’s move to Real Madrid and the resulting chain of events at Liverpool may now reshape Barcelona’s defensive strategy.
