Real Madrid confirm Raul Asencio will undergo surgery after right tibia fracture

Real Madrid have confirmed that defender Raul Asencio will undergo surgery on Thursday after suffering a stress fracture to the tibia in his right leg.

The operation represents a fresh setback for Real Madrid’s defence, with Asencio expected to face a lengthy recovery. Spanish newspaper Marca reports that the defender could be out for between two and four months, meaning he is likely to remain sidelined until approximately the beginning of next year.

Real Madrid said in a statement: “Our player Raul Asencio will undergo surgery tomorrow to treat a stress fracture in the tibia of his right leg.”

Asencio had been forced to stop training again after the pain in the affected area returned. Just one day later, the worst fears were confirmed at Valdebebas and the decision was taken for the Spanish defender to have surgery.

The pain had not fully subsided, and a further episode in the injured area proved decisive in prompting the club and player to proceed with the operation.

Surgery had already been considered for Asencio since the end of last season. That option was discussed at the time, with the summer viewed as an opportunity to begin the lengthy recovery process and reduce the period he would ultimately spend away from football.
