Benzema Under Fire as Madrid Press Questions His Impact
Karim Benzema is once again the subject of intense scrutiny in Spain, with Madrid daily AS publishing damning statistics that raise questions about the French striker’s role at Real Madrid.
The relationship between Benzema and the Spanish media has long been a turbulent one — often swinging between praise and criticism depending on his performances. But this time, the figures presented appear particularly stark.
“Real Madrid score more goals without Karim Benzema.” That was the bold headline splashed across AS on Friday, casting a shadow over the Frenchman’s influence at the club. The report pointed to Real Madrid’s recent goal-fests — 13 goals scored across their last two matches against Deportivo La Coruña and Elche, 10 of which came when Benzema was not on the pitch.
The timing could not be worse for the 26-year-old striker, who has netted just twice in eight appearances across all competitions this season. In contrast, Cristiano Ronaldo has been in ruthless form, finding the net 12 times in the same number of games.
Former Real Madrid icon Hugo Sánchez joined the chorus of criticism, bluntly stating: “Benzema has talent, but he lacks the efficiency we expect from a centre-forward.”
The numbers seem to support that view. According to AS, Real Madrid score a goal every 45.5 minutes when Benzema is on the field. Without him, that average increases to a goal every 16.8 minutes — a stark difference that raises questions about Benzema’s current form and value to the squad.
It’s not the first time Benzema has found himself in the crosshairs. During José Mourinho’s tenure as manager, the Portuguese coach famously compared him unfavourably to a hunting dog, saying: “If I can’t go hunting with a dog, I’ll have to go with a cat.”
Now, with Mexican striker Javier Hernández — on loan from Manchester United — showing hunger and drive, Benzema may find his starting role under renewed threat. The presence of Ronaldo, who continues to dominate the goal charts, only adds further pressure.
As Real Madrid continue their charge across domestic and European fronts, Benzema may soon be forced to deliver — or risk being left behind.
