Sami Khedira Staying at Real Madrid, Confirms Ancelotti
In a clear message to Europe’s top clubs, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has shut down speculation surrounding Sami Khedira’s future, insisting the German midfielder is not for sale this season.
Khedira, 27, had been widely tipped to leave the Spanish capital before the close of the summer transfer window. The World Cup winner, who is in the final year of his contract at the Bernabéu, was heavily linked with moves to Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United.
However, speaking to the press, Ancelotti made it clear that the club sees Khedira as a key part of their plans for the 2014–15 campaign.
“As far as Khedira is concerned, the matter is closed,” the Italian coach stated. “He is staying. He wants to stay, and we want him to stay. He is an important player for the squad.”
The statement comes at a time when Real Madrid are undergoing changes in midfield. Ángel Di María, one of the club’s standout performers last season, is on the verge of a move away — with Ancelotti already confirming that the Argentine has bid farewell to the team.
Khedira, who joined Madrid from VfB Stuttgart in 2010, has endured an inconsistent spell in Spain, largely due to injuries. However, his role in Germany’s victorious World Cup campaign in Brazil earlier this summer seemed to have reignited interest from major European clubs.
Despite the swirling rumours and his contractual situation, it now appears Khedira will remain a Madrid player for the foreseeable future, unless unexpected developments occur before the window shuts.
With Ancelotti’s midfield reshaped by the arrivals of Toni Kroos and James Rodríguez, Khedira may have to compete for his place, but his experience and physical presence continue to make him a valued asset.
For now, those eyeing a late move for the German international will have to look elsewhere.
