Nobel Mendy’s proposed move from Real Betis to Glasgow Rangers has been put on hold after negotiations between the two clubs failed to reach an agreement.

The 21-year-old Senegalese defender had been expected to complete a switch to Scotland, but talks have hit an impasse, leaving his immediate future uncertain. For now, the highly rated youngster remains in Spain as both clubs assess their next steps.

Mendy, who came through the youth system at Paris FC, has enjoyed a rapid rise since arriving at Betis. He marked his senior debut for the Andalusian side on 6 January 2024 in a Copa del Rey tie and quickly established himself as a player of promise.

His development accelerated further during the 2024–25 campaign, when he played a key role in Betis’s run to the Europa Conference League final, where they faced Fiorentina on 8 May 2025.

That exposure elevated his profile and inevitably drew interest from abroad, with Rangers positioning themselves at the front of the queue. The Scottish Premiership club had been keen to finalise the transfer this summer, viewing Mendy as an important addition to their defensive line.

However, the failure to reach terms with Betis has now stalled the move. The Spanish club remain reluctant to sanction the transfer without a deal they deem satisfactory, while Rangers are unwilling to overextend in negotiations. As a result, the process has reached a standstill, with Mendy left in limbo as the transfer window enters its decisive stages.

Despite the uncertainty, the young defender has adopted a patient stance, waiting to see whether a breakthrough can be found. Betis’s position suggests that any agreement would require compromise from both sides, though with the window still open, there remains scope for fresh developments.

Mendy’s situation is emblematic of the complexities of the transfer market, where promising talents often find themselves caught between opportunity and negotiation. For the Senegalese player, the coming weeks will determine whether he continues his progression in La Liga or begins a new chapter in Scotland.

For now, Real Betis have effectively blocked his path to Rangers, at least temporarily, leaving the player’s future unresolved. As the clock ticks down on the transfer window, the question remains whether the two clubs can return to the table and find common ground, or if Mendy will remain in Andalusia for another season.
