Real Betis unlikely to retain Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat beyond loan spell

Sofyan Amrabat’s time at Real Betis appears to be nearing its conclusion, with reports in the Spanish media indicating that the club has decided not to exercise its option to make the Moroccan midfielder’s stay permanent.

The 28-year-old is currently on loan at the Andalusian side from Turkish club Fenerbahçe, with the agreement due to expire on 30 June.

Unless there is an unexpected change in direction, Amrabat is expected to return to Turkey at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The decision would bring an end to a campaign in which the Moroccan international struggled to fully convince the club that he should become a long-term part of its plans.

According to reports from Spain, Real Betis have assessed both the sporting and financial aspects of a permanent transfer and concluded that a deal is unlikely to represent value for the club.

Amrabat joined Betis from Fenerbahçe, where he remains under contract until June 2028.

His return to Istanbul would leave the player facing an important decision regarding the next stage of his career, whether that involves reintegrating into Fenerbahçe’s squad or exploring another transfer opportunity.

The midfielder arrived in Spain with a strong international reputation and a profile built around defensive discipline, physical presence and tactical awareness.

However, reports suggest that his performances in La Liga have not consistently met expectations.

Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that Betis officials have not been sufficiently convinced by the player’s displays to justify activating the purchase clause included in his loan agreement.

While Amrabat has demonstrated moments of quality and influence in midfield, concerns reportedly remain about his ability to deliver those performances on a regular basis.

During the season, he made 29 appearances for the club.

According to the reports, Fenerbahçe would seek approximately €12 million for a permanent transfer.

Real Betis are understood to view that valuation as too high, particularly when combined with a salary package estimated at close to €4 million per year.

The combined cost of the operation is said to have raised doubts among club officials, who are reportedly considering alternative recruitment strategies.

Rather than committing significant resources to a permanent deal for Amrabat, Betis are believed to prefer investing in younger players with greater long-term development potential.

That approach has reportedly influenced the club’s decision as much as the player’s performances on the pitch.

For Amrabat, the outcome appears increasingly clear.
