Rayo Vallecano have entered negotiations with central defender Abdul Mumin regarding a contract extension, aiming to secure the future of the Ghanaian international and ward off interest from other clubs.
With just one year remaining on his current deal at the end of the 2024/25 season, Rayo Vallecano is eager to act swiftly to tie down the 26-year-old for a further three years, keeping him at the Estadio de Vallecas until at least June 2029.
According to sources close to the player’s camp, the Spanish club has made an offer with improved terms, recognising Mumin as a key figure in their defensive lineup for the upcoming seasons.
Rayo Vallecano, under coach Iñigo Pérez, sees the Ghanaian as a crucial player to build their defense around and intends to prevent him from entering the final year of his contract without an extension.
“They (Rayo Vallecano) want to extend his (Mumin) contract early, before he enters his final year, for three more years.
He will be in his final year next season and will be able to negotiate with other clubs, so they don’t want those scenarios,” a high-ranking source from Mumin’s representatives disclosed.
The club views the 26-year-old as one of their most important players, and they are committed to locking him down long-term.
A Crucial Figure in Rayo’s Defense
Mumin, who joined Rayo Vallecano from Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães at the beginning of the 2022/23 season, has quickly become a central figure in the club’s defensive setup.
In his two seasons at the Estadio de Vallecas, Mumin has made 64 appearances in all competitions, showcasing his reliability and defensive prowess.
Valued at €5 million by Transfermarkt, the Ghanaian has firmly established himself as one of the most consistent and dependable defenders in La Liga.
Despite being sidelined since March 1 due to injury — when he was forced off the pitch in the 35th minute during a match against Sevilla — Mumin has still contributed significantly to Rayo Vallecano’s season, featuring in 25 matches across both La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
His solid performances over the past two seasons have made him a mainstay in the team, and Rayo Vallecano is keen to ensure he remains at the club for the long term.
International Recognition and Growing Reputation
Mumin’s impressive form at the club level has also earned him recognition on the international stage. After receiving his first call-up to the Ghana national team in 2022, Mumin had to wait until 2024 to make his senior debut.
Since then, he has earned four competitive caps, appearing in both Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers. His growing reputation as one of Ghana’s top defenders has added to the interest surrounding his future, with several European clubs monitoring his situation.
Having spent three years at Vitória Guimarães, where he was a key player in the Portuguese top flight, and previously playing for Nordsjaelland in Denmark, Mumin’s career trajectory has been on an upward swing.
His solid performances across various European leagues have cemented his place as one of the most promising African defenders in Europe.
A Vital Decision for Rayo Vallecano’s Future
As Rayo Vallecano looks to strengthen its squad for the future, securing Mumin’s services for the long term is seen as a vital move.
With several teams potentially eyeing the Ghanaian defender, Rayo Vallecano is determined to extend his contract and avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer when his current deal expires.
The talks over Mumin’s future are expected to continue in the coming weeks, and the outcome could play a crucial role in shaping the club’s defensive strategy for next season.
Should the deal be concluded successfully, it would not only be a significant win for Rayo Vallecano but also a major step forward for Mumin as he looks to continue his development at the highest level of European football.
