Rayners urges Sundowns to score early against Golden Arrows

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners says scoring early will be crucial if the CAF champions are to overcome Lamontville Golden Arrows in their Carling Knockout quarter-final.

Rayners believes an early goal could force Golden Arrows to abandon the defensive approach expected from a team managed by Mandla Ncikazi, who recently took charge after previously serving as Orlando Pirates assistant coach.

Speaking to the Sundowns media team before the knockout tie, the Bafana striker said his side expected to create chances but needed to be more decisive in front of goal.

“For us as a team, we always have a lot of opportunities against them, but we just have to make sure we punish them as early as possible.

“Once we score first, then we know the game will open up, and we know we will win the game,” Rayners said.

His comments underline Sundowns’ belief that efficiency will be important in a cup match against opponents likely to arrive with a carefully prepared defensive plan. Rayners also recognised that knockout football can be unpredictable, although he backed Sundowns’ experience to help them deal with the pressure of the occasion.

The forward has made a strong start to the season, scoring five goals in 11 appearances across all competitions. His finishing has added another attacking option for Sundowns and could be significant as they pursue progress in the knockout competition.

Rayners also praised Ncikazi, while acknowledging the tactical challenge typically posed by teams preparing to face Sundowns.

“The coach of Golden Arrows, he’s a good coach. Especially when teams play against Sundowns, they know how to set up,” he said.
