Raymond Tchayé has been named the new head coach of Benin’s U20 national team, taking over from Vincent Rautureau ahead of the upcoming WAFU B U20 Championship in Ghana.
Tchayé, who was recently confirmed as the coach of the U23 national side, will now also oversee the development and direction of the U20 squad.
His dual role signals a coordinated approach to youth football in Benin, as the country looks to strengthen its pipeline of talent across age groups.
His predecessor, Vincent Rautureau, had managed the U20 team on an interim basis during the last West African Football Union (UFOA B) tournament held in October 2024.
Rautureau, who continues to serve as the technical director of youth football within the Beninese Football Federation, had temporarily stepped into the role to ensure continuity during the competition.
The federation’s decision to formally appoint Tchayé marks a strategic move to consolidate leadership ahead of a pivotal tournament.
He will lead the U20 Cheetahs at the WAFU B U20 Cup, scheduled to take place from 15 to 30 June 2025 in Accra, Ghana.
The appointment comes at a time when Benin is aiming to reassert itself in youth competitions in the West African sub-region.
The WAFU B U20 Cup serves not only as a key developmental tournament for young players but also as a qualifier for future continental engagements, including the U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
With Tchayé now at the helm of both the U20 and U23 teams, expectations are high for a consistent tactical identity and a streamlined transition for players progressing through the ranks.
The dual responsibility is also viewed as an opportunity to foster cohesion between age levels, ensuring that promising players are adequately prepared for the demands of international football.
Tchayé’s immediate focus will be on assembling a competitive squad for the Accra tournament.
His task will involve scouting domestic talent, assessing players’ readiness, and fine-tuning a squad capable of challenging regional heavyweights.
As preparations begin, the pressure will be on to make a strong impression in June and lay the groundwork for a new generation of Cheetahs.
The Beninese football community will be watching closely as Tchayé takes charge, hopeful that his leadership can bring fresh momentum to the nation’s youth football setup.
