Raymond Domenech has finally addressed his decision to decline the opportunity to coach the Eagles of Carthage. Speaking on Ma Chaine Sport on Monday evening, the former coach of the French national team revealed his hesitations.
“I hesitated until the last moment,” he admitted. “It’s difficult to turn down such an opportunity because it was a promising project, a prestigious position. However, I wanted to take on the role under conditions where I had control and a clear vision of the situation. I didn’t want to simply take on the job and wander around the country. I wanted to make a meaningful impact. Unfortunately, the conditions weren’t right for me,” he explained.
Domenech, who was poised to embark on his first coaching experience on the African continent, emphasized that he didn’t want to make the journey alone. He desired to be accompanied by a staff of his choosing.
“Yes, I am open to new opportunities, but only if I have the necessary support to succeed. I didn’t have the freedom to select my own assistant; it had to be someone already in Tunisia,” he added.
Reflecting on the challenges of coaching abroad, Domenech acknowledged the complexities involved, particularly in terms of scouting and following local championships. Despite recognizing Tunisia’s strong team and talented players, he ultimately decided to withdraw from the opportunity.
