Borussia Dortmund is still keen on signing Lyon’s creative forward Rayan Cherki this summer, but the deal hinges on money, specifically, what the club can earn and offload before then.
The 21-year-old Frenchman has long been admired by BVB, and talks had once looked promising. Back in winter, Dortmund seemed close to landing Cherki, only for Lyon’s owner John Textor to pull the plug on a proposed €22.5 million agreement.
Now, the Bundesliga side is revisiting the idea, but with caution. A final decision is expected after the season ends, when Dortmund’s financial situation becomes clearer.
Success at the Club World Cup in the U.S., set to begin in June, could play a major role. Each group-stage win is worth €1.78 million, funds that could help finance a move for Cherki.
Christian Falk told CaughtOffside that Dortmund remains “highly interested,” but must first sort out potential player sales to make space and budget for the deal.
