Rayan Cherki has responded firmly to criticism in France after Les Bleus’ Nations League victory over Belgium on Monday, insisting his performances reflect the demands of adapting to a new position at Manchester City and at international level.
The former OL player has faced scrutiny over a perceived drop in form. Cherki said he was adjusting to different responsibilities and needed time to settle into his new role before returning to his best.
“You have talked about my dribbles and my passes, but I am playing in a role now where I am forcing myself to produce complete and clean performances,” Cherki told TF1 after the match against Belgium.
“People who really understand football get that. Those who think otherwise do not understand these things. I have learned to play in a new position. I have to produce clean and consistent performances, and it is a position I like. As time goes on, you will see that it will become an easier position.”
Cherki began the game on the bench but made an immediate impact after coming on. He scored France’s second goal in the 81st minute, converting a pass from Michael Olise.
His appearance also gave him the opportunity to address reports of a possible disagreement with the Bayern player, with whom he said he enjoys a strong relationship within the France squad.
“We have extraordinary group cohesion,” Cherki said. “You cannot see that because it happens privately, between us. I have rarely known a group that plays so well from the first player to the last, and from the first member of staff to the last.
“It is enjoyable, and you can feel it on the pitch.”
