Algerian left-back Aït-Nouri impresses after injury recovery

Rayan Aït-Nouri has emerged as a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City squad after recovering from an ankle injury that disrupted his season.

The Algerian left-back, who also missed the Africa Cup of Nations, has regained his rhythm and is now considered a reliable option in the Premier League champions’ lineup.

In recent weeks, Aït-Nouri has climbed the pecking order, starting several league matches and earning Guardiola’s growing trust.

Offensively, he has made a noticeable impact, providing two assists in his last two appearances for City and contributing significantly to the team’s attacking play.

Speaking ahead of City’s FA Cup clash against Newcastle, Guardiola praised the 23-year-old’s recent progress.

“He has improved a lot in the last few games. He understands what we want and what we need. His quality on the ball is fantastic,” the manager said.

The Spanish coach also highlighted Aït-Nouri’s overall contribution beyond defensive duties.

“He brings us added fluidity in our passing and, defensively, he is more aggressive and faster than we think. Regarding his work on the touchline, he is improving day by day,” Guardiola added.

Aït-Nouri’s recent rise in importance comes after a challenging first half of the season, during which his injury limited his game time.

Guardiola confirmed that the left-back’s early substitution against Nottingham Forest was precautionary.

“Unfortunately, during the last match, he felt discomfort in his legs; he wasn’t comfortable at all. That’s why we didn’t want to take any risks,” the coach explained.

Now fully fit, Aït-Nouri appears set to play an increasingly central role in Manchester City’s push across domestic competitions, demonstrating both defensive solidity and attacking support.

His return has strengthened the options on the left flank and given Guardiola a versatile player capable of contributing across multiple phases of play.
