Raphinha penalty puts Barcelona ahead against Elche in La Liga week two
Raphinha has given Barcelona the lead against Elche with a powerful penalty after being fouled inside the area by Victor Chust Garcia.
Barcelona were awarded the spot-kick after Raphinha was brought down during an attempt to break into the Elche penalty area. The forward took responsibility from the penalty spot and struck a fierce effort into the net, giving Barcelona the opening goal of the match.
The goal came after Barcelona had repeatedly looked for a way through Elche’s defence. Their attacking pressure eventually produced the decisive moment when Raphinha entered the area and was stopped by the Elche defender.
Raphinha’s finish put Barcelona in front in their La Liga week-two fixture. Elche had not been able to create a clear scoring opportunity before the penalty, while Barcelona had gradually increased their control of the match.
Earlier, Lamine Yamal had gone close for Barcelona when he received the ball inside the penalty area and sent a shot narrowly wide of the goal. The effort was one of the clearest chances of the opening stages before Raphinha’s penalty.
Barcelona also made several attempts to penetrate Elche’s defensive shape, although much of their possession was played in front of the home side’s defence. Their players exchanged a series of short passes in midfield without creating immediate danger in front of goal.
Elche’s main opportunity to threaten came from a corner. A cross was delivered into the Barcelona penalty area, but Eric Garcia dealt with the danger and cleared the ball successfully.
There were also offside decisions against both sides during the opening period. Nino was flagged offside for Elche, while Lamine Yamal was later caught beyond the last defender as Barcelona tried to build another attack.
The match began with Barcelona looking to establish control through possession and patient passing. Elche defended in numbers and attempted to restrict the spaces around their penalty area, forcing Barcelona to search for openings rather than creating clear chances straight away.
After half an hour of play, Barcelona remained ahead thanks to Raphinha’s penalty. The goal had given them the advantage, but Elche continued to defend compactly and Barcelona were still relying on controlled build-up play to create further opportunities.
The latest scoreline leaves Barcelona 1-0 in front, with Raphinha’s spot-kick separating the teams.
