Raphinha must rediscover his best form to stay in Barcelona’s starting XI

Brazil forward Raphinha will begin the new season under intense pressure to retain his place in Barcelona’s starting line-up after the club strengthened its attacking options.

The 28-year-old was one of the key figures in an outstanding campaign two years ago, scoring 34 goals and providing 26 assists. During that period, he had no serious rival for his role in the Catalan side.

His position is now less secure, however, after a campaign affected by injuries and a relative drop in production. Raphinha scored 21 goals and created eight more last season, figures which represented a significant decline from the previous year.

According to a report by Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona’s decision to sign Anthony Gordon and Jesse Piesioo has increased the competition for places in the forward line. The club could also use Karim Adeyemi on the left side, adding another potential challenge to Raphinha’s position.

The arrival of those players is expected to create a demanding battle for a starting role, with Raphinha required to show that he remains the strongest option on the flank.

Marcus Rashford has since left the club. Although his numbers were impressive, with 14 goals and 14 assists, he did not ultimately establish himself as a genuine competitor to Raphinha.

Barcelona’s new attacking options bring different qualities to the squad, including high-intensity pressing, speed and a direct threat in front of goal. Gordon is regarded as the clearest example of that profile and could force Raphinha to produce his best football if he is to remain a regular starter.

Raphinha’s previous contribution means he remains an important part of Barcelona’s attacking plans, but his position can no longer be considered guaranteed. His reduced output last season, combined with the increased depth on the left, has changed the situation ahead of the new campaign.

The Brazilian’s task will be to respond to that pressure on the pitch. While he was previously able to operate without a serious challenger for his place, he now faces competition from players capable of offering pace, energy and goals.

Gordon’s arrival, alongside the signing of Jesse Piesioo and the possibility of deploying Adeyemi on the left, gives Barcelona several alternatives. That competition will give the team greater attacking choice, but it also means Raphinha must demonstrate that he can still provide the level of performance that made him so influential two seasons ago.

With Barcelona preparing for the new season, the Brazilian enters it knowing that his place in the starting XI will depend on more than reputation. His numbers, fitness and ability to meet the demands of the team will all be under close scrutiny as he attempts to remain a central figure in the Catalan club’s first-choice attack.
