Rangers boss Derek McInnes hails South African defender Makhanya after impressive debut

Rangers manager Derek McInnes has heaped praise on Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya following his impressive Old Firm debut in the club’s commanding 3-0 victory over Celtic.

The South African defender produced a standout display as Rangers secured a convincing win over their city rivals, further enhancing his growing reputation since arriving at Ibrox from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.

McInnes was particularly impressed with Makhanya’s composure and versatility, highlighting the young defender’s ability to adapt to different positions and perform at a high level despite being relatively new to Scottish football.

“He’s been sensational, he really has and it’s tough to single anyone out but the bigger the game, the bigger the performance and you’re learning about your players, but you are absolutely right,” McInnes said in his post-match press conference.

The Rangers boss revealed that Makhanya was initially deployed on the left side of a back three before being moved to right-back during the match.

“He was absolutely first class, and we ask a lot of him. We started him as left of three [in defence] and he ended up at right back, and wherever I play him, for somebody so young, for someone who’s just come into the country, to the club, there’s trust,” he added.

McInnes also stressed the importance of being able to rely on his players, particularly during high-pressure fixtures such as the Old Firm derby, and believes Makhanya has already earned his trust.

“I need to be able to trust my players and I feel as if I can trust, I think he’s been almost faultless since he’s came into the building,” McInnes said.

Makhanya’s performance against Celtic represents another significant step in his adaptation to life at Rangers after making the move from Philadelphia Union.

The defender’s ability to operate effectively in multiple positions has also given McInnes an additional option at the back, while his performances have quickly earned the confidence of the Rangers coaching staff.

For Makhanya, the Old Firm display will provide further encouragement as he continues to establish himself at Ibrox and push for a more prominent role with both Rangers and the South African national team.

His impressive start in Scotland will also be welcomed by Bafana Bafana, with the defender continuing to develop his experience at a major European club.
