Morena Ramoreboli earned his first victory as head coach of Botswana’s national team, guiding the Zebras to a 2-0 triumph over Somalia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The match, held at Francistown Stadium, remained goalless until Gape Mohutsiwa broke the deadlock in the 74th minute. Mothusi Johnson sealed the win nine minutes later, boosting Botswana’s qualification hopes.
Botswana Strengthens Position in Group G
The victory moves Botswana to third place in Group G with nine points from six matches. They remain seven points adrift of group leaders Algeria and trail second-placed Mozambique by three points as the qualification campaign progresses.
Ramoreboli, who took charge in October 2024 following Didier Gomes Da Rosa’s departure to Libyan club Al Ahli Tripoli, initially joined on a provisional basis.
His mandate included leading Botswana to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. After being officially confirmed in his position in January 2025, his tenure began with a 3-1 defeat to Algeria before bouncing back with this crucial win over Somalia.
A Proven Track Record in Botswana Football
Before stepping into the national team role, Ramoreboli achieved considerable success with Jwaneng Galaxy, where he secured back-to-back Botswana Premier League titles and lifted the Orange FA Cup. Under his guidance, Jwaneng Galaxy also reached the CAF Champions League group stage, recording a memorable victory over Wydad Casablanca and eliminating South African giants Orlando Pirates in the second preliminary round.
With his first win now secured, Ramoreboli will look to build on this result as Botswana continues its push for a historic World Cup qualification.
